The day after December 25th

Today is December 26th. Had to work today. I went to the Thai place in Quail Hill (in Irvine). I think the name of that place is Bamboo Bistro. The food is alright, but they forgot to serve me the rice soup before the meal. The only reason I went into that place is because there are some interesting people in there (well I saw from the front). But the host (or the waiter) put me all the way in the back. So this might not be an ideal place for a single person to enjoy a meal. I ordered the "Fire Chicken" from their lunch menu. Not too spicy, again this restaurant is in Irvine. During the meal, I hear the host/hostess speaking in broken Cantonese and some Vietnamese.

After work, I had dinner with FY and his girlfriend at the Little Fat Lamb in Monterey Park. It's okay but not as exciting as the first time I went there with Phil Gor and David. The service is so so today and cooker/heater took awhile get heated to the point where the water was boiling.

Yi and his gf wanted to check out the Downtown area, but I advised them to go there earlier in the day time.

Afterward I drove home, checking various blog about the Houston Rockets. Nothing too exciting.

Mr. Mao works for O-corp

FY im-ed me and told me my best friend from UT now works for O-corp. Whenever he says "your" good friend I have some reservation in his interpretation of "friendship". Yeah I still remember Mr. Mao. I often pronounced his named Mo Wei in Cantonese which means "not meaningful". I often walked over to his office and made some not so meaningful conversation. When I think back, I was the one who's "not so meaningful" (mo-liu). Mr. Mao is quite awesome in Ping Pong. Even though he was awful in the distributed computing class, he was a Phd student and might have gotten his Doctorate. Every time, I walked by his office, he seemed very busy and always had a purpose. Unlike me who is always mo-liu, Mr. Mao seemed knows what happening. Last time I heard, he was married in China. Dang, what have I done lately?

Drove Up to Long Beach

The past weekend, I drove up to Long Beach from the OC. I was just checking out some Condos in Long Beach, hoping that I can find a decent one in a decent neighborhood. I have not heard positive things about the neighborhoods in LB, but I was willing to give it a try given that the real estate price in the OC is over my head. The first one I place I checked out is on 10th Street near Anaheim. Hmm.. The pictures look very good online, but the neighborhood was so so. On one end of 10th street is a Rehab center. On the other end was a high school/stadium. The other place I visited was on Hermosa Blvd just 2 block north of 4th street. Very difficult to find a parking spot around that area. Also, some neighboring properties looked run-down. I think both area are not necessarily bad and maybe had a feel of those "artist" neighborhood, but since I want a place with some tranquility, I opted for some place in the OC.

A night in LA Chinatown

It had been almost two weeks since Phil, David, and I drove to Chinatown, LA to take some pictures for the WEBSITE. I just got a chance to look a hand full of photos I took. Right now, there're just a few venues happening IN Chinatown, but there were some interesting spots if one should ever go there on a Saturday evening. First of all, there's a dive bar in the Chungking Road area. Second, the Mountain Club(name?) were pretty interesting. The bartender/manager (Mr. Lee) was great. He let us took some pictures in the Club. BTW, there's no cover charges. The crowd is 20s to 30s. The Dive Bar features an older dude named Sidney. He has an attitude so we did not talk to him that much, but I like his ATTITUDE. When we walked out of Sidney's place we bumped into a lovely couple. Then we ended the night with a visit to the Wong Kok restaurant. One noticeable thing about this place is that it opened very late. We went there around 2 AM.

Top Chef

I've watching this show called "Top Chef" on Bravo. One of my favorite chef is Hung Nguyen. Not too many knows how to called black chicken. This dude is one of the few who can make an "Asian Fusion" dish out of an ingredient in a Chinese Herb soup. I was really impressed. He said he's the crazy type. Now, Crazy Asian is GREAT. The first guest-judge is Anthony Bourdain. I have enjoyed his series on the Discovery Channel. Another wise-talking chef is Howie Kleinberg. So far I have not seen what he has cooked, but I really like the way he replied to judges. Basically he said that he would rather to present the NOTHING than to present something crappy to the customers.

Google Streetview and Gear are awesome

I was playing with the Google Streetview. It was awesome. Too bad it's only implemented for a few selected cities. I thought it would be awesome if Los Angeles would be on the map. There are many interesting places in LA that other people should check out. It took me awhile to realized that the photos of SF on Google Streetview was taken sometimes in 2006. Google Gear is awesome too it allows you to work with Web Application offline. I have yet to test it out.

One more comment about YUI (Yahoo UI Library). I was reading an article on Dr. Dobb's Journal
http://www.ddj.com/dept/lightlang/199203087 The article does a decent survey on the web toolkits out there. I don't the there's one choice fits for every project. But for a project described in the article, YUI might be a perfect fit. I think code size is still one of the main issue in WebApp development.

WebApp that is basically a front end to the database can utilized something that is more automated like Dataface.

I found a new site called LAChinatown.COM. I find some of the information posted there very interesting and useful. If you want to find out more about Los Angeles Chinatown, you should definitely check it out. I noticed it is still under construction and some of the links are even broken. Maybe check it out again in a few weeks.

Upper Yosemite Fall

This picture was take a few weeks ago from our trip to Yosemite. It was a great trip. Again applaud Phil for planning and organizing our activities. One memorable thing we did was trying to bathe ourselves in the men's room. I even washed my head there. The hike was strenuous but it was not too bad. I did ran out of supplies half way to the top. Did manage to get to the top with a PowerBar from Mr. Phil again. On the way down, I rushed a little bit and twisted my right angle. It was not serious but took me almost two weeks to get the Tiger Balm to rub it on my foot.

I have discovered YUI (Yahoo User Interface Library). I think it's comparable to the Google's GWT. It's all Javascript based, whereas GWT is Java based and the developer has to run a utility supplied to generate the Javascripts. I think there's Pros and Cons of both methods. With GWT, it's easier to perform certain type of debugging based the original code is in Java. But it's also heavenly dependent on how good a job the GWT utility is doing in converting the code from Java to Javascript. With YUI, all your code is in Javascript. I find debuggers that supports interpreted codes are not as good as those that comes with an compiled code. Also, Javascript embedded inside a HTML documents tends to like spaghetti codes once it get to be a certain size. Of course, it really depends on how you organize your code. The nice thing about YUI is that you can see the results right away with the browser of your choice.

UI components built using both GWT and YUI can be refined using CSS style sheets.

With that being said, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH THESE NEW TOOLS?

Flying Back to OC

Just got back from my trip. Was in the DFW airport's Course D for about 3 hours and was able to watched the Spurs vs. Nuggets. Pretty interesting game. The Big 3s of the Spurs were not performing well today, so they lost. Had dinner at the Popeyes in the airport. I prefer the Popeyes in Texas than in those in California cuz they have more Cajun selections on the menu. I have not had Crawfish Etouffe (sp?) for a while, so ordered that and had that while enjoying the NBA game. The flight back to OC was a little bit awkward cuz the older lady sit next to me kept putting her elbow on the arm-rest in between our seats, actually intruding my domain and she took her shoes off the whole flight. Seems to me she had some medication and given that she's old and probably could not speak English, I just let that go. Flight entertainment was mostly CBS re-runs. Did not know Elaine from Seinfeld has a new show. It was just so so. BTW, DFW Airport's Course D is awesome, seats are great and has LCD TVs all around.

A Visit to Long Beach

Drove to Long Beach to participate in a a group Whale Watch. It was fun. The boat was full of people. Did got glimpses of the whale and saw many dolphins. Afterward, we had lunch at a Vietnamese place called Hong Phat. Then watched the NCAA Final Four at a local brewery.

Seems to me the last few days had gone by just like that. The lack of sleep has made me feel sluggish. Nothing particular occupy my mind in the evening. Just getting a bad habit of going to bed late and waking up late. I have been checking on the geographical locations of the visitors. Thank you whoever you are from Santa Monica or Ponoma :) I also noticed there is one from Philadephila. I also saw someone from Beijing. Thank you for your visits. The last few days I have been practicing a few songs. I hope I can show off my bad voice in the upcoming Karaoke visit. I am sure Phil and David needs to wear some protective gears. What else is happening. Simon L. is flying in from Taiwan for the LA Marathon on March 4th. I have signed up for the 5K Run/Walk. That should be a fun thing to do.

碧血劍 (mainland version) is actually pretty good. I spent every evening this week watching this TV series. I was curious to see how much materials in the Kung Fu novel is real, so every once while I would be looking up facts in Wikipedia.org. I wonder how those characters in the Kung Fu novel and their traits would be viewed in today's society. Maybe I just concentrate on one character tonight. 袁崇煥 (Yuan Chonghuan) was never in the series per se, but was the main character's father. He was a brilliant commander (according to Wikipedia), but loyal to an incompetent emperor. The tv series stressed that he was looking after the general well-being of the people. I think this trait is still valued today. However, we learned that trusting your life in the hands of incompetent fools might have disastrous consequences. My friend Simon pointed out that back then even if you might have high IQ. But because they are "programmed" to value loyality since day one, they just blindly followed the emperor's orders. But if Yuan was truely looking after the welfare of the people, should he have revolted? But if revolution means suffering.. then maybe he was doing what's the best. I still think that bestowing too much power in the hand of an incompetent fool is bad. But putting your life at mercy is ever worse.

I am not a big fan of Beyond at least not as much as those who are still attending their concerts and buying their CD. This group does have a fair share of memorable songs. I don't remember much but one song just kept retained in my mind for most of the day - Bright Latter Days. I thought it was a song about living the pas, but it is actually about human struggle in Africa. I think we don't hear a lot about Africa except we know it's backward, a lot of fighting, and possible the various tribes, or maybe the Apathy. But we don't hear that much that part of the world. I think the last time the world cares about Africa was because of the big hunger and aids but those events have lost past. Maybe back then we did a lot and at least we felt we did a lot. And maybe that's why our zealous efforts has ceased. This is kinda fit into my original interpretation of 光辉岁月. I think Africa needs our attention for it to have really a bright future. If you got a chance, do something within our power to help out.

Nonsense On The Web

When you see this page, you might be wondering, why is the guy wasting bandwidth talking about nonsense. In fact, there are so many crappy materials on the web. Especially nowaday, everyone can put something on the web. Whether they want to sell their figurine collections or just want to let someone out there know they have the latest Sony Playstation, It's all out there. But then, the reason why you got to this page possibly means that you are bored and not that productive or else you will be the CEO of Google or something. But then those guys also like to put their mundane routines on the web. Yes Mundane.. I think Chris of Mesa used this word in his blog.

Foggy Night

The night is very foggy in HB. When I was driving home from the gym, I could not see anything in front of the car. This is what I think. I think if we know our way to the destination, fog is not a big obstacle. Let say you don't know the layout of the roads or don't even know where you are going, it's become a something you have to bare in addition to find your way around. I think this watery condensation in the air definitely does not help. Every once awhile you can see bright spot but then as you move on, it's a long dark and uncertain path. Maybe the best way to travel in a foggy night is that you have to know your course and your destination or else just stay home. But sometimes you really don't have a choice but to march on... in that case just use a flashlight or turn on the high beam light.

Need Restaurants Open Late in OC

How come there are no healthy restaurants open late in this area? Here's the thing. I think there's a need for restaurants that cater to the lifestyle of singles in the area. After 9PM, only fast food places open their doors. I think there needs to be restaurants open late that serves healthy foods. Let's face it, singles have more need to eat healthy and stay fit or else they probably would in that lifestyle forever. By dinner, the healthier restaurants are packed with family or people who have their significant others. So, it might be better for the singles to stay home until those groups are done. Restaurants should consider this as an business opportunity. If fact, it might encourage more singles to dine out. Dinner for tonight - Spicy Wrap from McDonald's.

Phil sent me a link to a MTV of an old song by Danny Chan named 一生何求 (literally translated as what you are asking for [pursuing] in life? I remember that TVB seris very well. It's made in the late 80s. Besides the story was good (very sad), the song itself is also memorable. The two lines possibly captured the essense of the whole song is

没料到我所失的
竟已是我的所有

Since I am no music critics, I can only try to express my understanding of the lyrics. The lyric by itself tells a struggle by a person. Possibly a life time struggle. It definitely contains a look back or self reflection on life. From the very beginning it goes:

冷暖哪可休
回头多少个秋

I also tried to say life is full of decisions and when you look back you really don't know what you have missed.

In comparsion, a song with the same name by Leo Ku (古巨基) is less gloom. It presented a picture of the guy and his special someone who go through and type of moments they would have even with very little.

没有钱不要走　到了有钱通处走

The lyric of the latter song is also more optimistic. In the song, if the character has no found that special someone already, he's probably hoping that he will find that someone.

State Bros.

I was driving home from the Gym. Got a little bit thristy. So I decided to stop by the Grocery. I 've going to this new Ralph's, but drove by a State Bros. I decided not to go to State Bros tonight like every night before that. In fact I have not been there at all. Nothing personal. I just wondered why I have not been there. I seen their ads and knew they just remodeled, but then I just don't go. Which reminded me of the State Bros out there. I applaud you for just staying around, regardless you are the underdogs of the grocery industry. Appearance wise I don't know if you have attracted anyone, possibly not as much as the Albertson or the Ralph's out there. But I have to applaud you. Please don't let most of us who judge things by their appearance make you quit. You make the grocery industry more interesting. I promise you. I will stop by next time. Well, to cut the story short. Instead of buying a MinuteMaid fruit punch, I bought something called Thrist Rocket. Taste kinda different, but I do want to say thank you for bring something different to the world. I know most of us don't like pork chops or what the world think is pork chops. But without the pork chops, do we still see Mrs. Pitt the same way?

Hurricane on the Bayou - A MacGillivray Freeman Film

Got a free pass from Steve to see this documentary. Not bad for an 1 hr long movie. Some dramatic effects. It's pretty cool to see it on an IMAX Theater. The movie is partly narrated by some local musicians of New Orlean. So the before and after is described from their perspectives. A major theme is about the impact of the disappearing Wetland on the New Orlean besides ecologically but also as an preventive measure on the Hurricanes. It's a movie worth watching. A co-worker joked about why did it should the people who robbed the stores. I saw something like that on Youtube where some office on duty actually went to Walmart and took part in the looting.

November 11, 2004. Partly cloudy. Another lame day for me. Did not do much. I think this New England weather is making me a little bit down. Darkness is lurking eminently behind the brief sunny afternoon like a hand suffocating the candle light as the palm hover closer to the light, leaving nothing but a growing shadow on the wall. Been reading Virginia Wolfe. Just the first few pages of The Waves. What's new in school. Hmmm. Me in the sea of people wandering aimlessly and exhaustingly trying to make AN eye contact. All I can see is HER disconnected sight. What is my motivation AGAIN? I am indeed getting old.

It's 1:16 A.M. in the morning. Got up not to watch the Sox won the World Series. Very interesting series. Indeed you can say it's a very interesting page in history. Around 11:30 P.M. picked up Smith from the bus station and went to Wal-mart of picked up some grocery afterward. Like my friend Chris said in his e-blog, right now everything sounds mundane. Need to get excited again about school and life in general.

Good old Saturday. One of my favorite day of the week. Did not do much. Went to bed around 4 and did not get up till 4:30 P.M. Wow, this cold thing is consuming a lot of my energy. Still have a lot to catch up in 3 classes. There's no way I am going out. Given that I am in Concord, I don't think I will be missing much. What is in here anyway - The Barley House, Capital Grill, and Pennuche's. On top of that, they really don't have a diverse clowd. Mingling with a bunch of No Talent A. Clowds was never my thing.

Friday is always a good day. Being coughing for two weeks already and has not subsided. Just chilling and not doing much today. Done some laundry and got myself a space heater and a electric blanket. I think that should be enough to combat the New England winter.

What I am doing in New Hampshire? Quiet. Not too much happening. Nothing really exciting. But for now it's an ideal place for me to concentrate on my studying. It's not far away from the other Ocean - Alantic. It's not that far from a big city - Boston. In fact, it not far from another country - Canada. So, New Hampshire (N.H. thereafter), is not far from the other things. The only thing I am complaining is that N.H. is a little bit far from home and from my friends.
